After a year and a half since the previous release, the alternative build of Linux Mint — Linux Mint Debian Edition 6, based on the Debian package base (the classic Linux Mint is based on the Ubuntu package base), has been published. The distribution is available as installation ISO images with the Cinnamon 5.8 desktop environment.
LMDE is aimed at technically savvy users and provides newer versions of packages. The goal of LMDE's development is to ensure that Linux Mint can continue to exist in the same form even if Ubuntu's development stops. Additionally, LMDE helps to verify that the applications developed by the project work properly in systems other than Ubuntu.
The LMDE package includes most of the improvements from the classic release of Linux Mint 21.2, including support for Flatpak packages and original projects (application manager, update management system, configurators, menus, interface, text editor Xed, photo manager Pix, document viewer Xreader, image viewer Xviewer). The distribution is fully compatible with Debian GNU/Linux 12 but is not package-compatible with Ubuntu and classic releases of Linux Mint. The system environment corresponds to the composition of Debian GNU/Linux 12 (Linux kernel 6.1, systemd 252, GCC 12.2, Mesa 22.3.6).
