New versions of the compact Live distribution Slax have been released—15.0.2 based on the Slackware project and 12.1.0 based on Debian (in 2018, the distribution was switched to the Debian package system, but in the Slax 15 release, the project returned to using Slackware). The graphical environment in Slax is built on the FluxBox window manager and the xLunch program launcher interface, specifically designed by the project participants. The boot image for version 15.0.2 is 255 MB (x86_64, i386), while version 12.1.0 is 435 MB (x86_64, i386).
In the new version:
- The core of the Slax 15.0.2 release has been updated to Slackware 15.0.2-current, and Slax 12.1.0 has been updated to Debian 12.1.
- Session management has been improved when booting from writable media such as USB Flash drives and hard disks. Previously, Slax did not support session separation and recorded all changes in the /slax/changes directory. In the new releases, the ability to use multiple sessions has been added, with content saved in subdirectories within /slax/changes/. During boot, options to create a new session, restore a previous one, or select one of the past sessions are provided through a menu.
- Support for changing the maximum size of the dynfilefs filesystem, used for storing user data and automatically expandable as new data is saved, has been added. Previously, the upper limit of dynfilefs was hardcoded and could not be changed. In the new versions, this limitation has been removed, and the boot parameter perchsize=X can be used to change the limit.
- The capabilities of the 'from' boot parameter, used to select the directory containing distribution data for booting, have been expanded. In addition to the previously supported options 'from=/myslax/' and 'from=http://domain.com/myslax.iso', the new version allows specifying a device ('from=/dev/sda1/slax') and prompting for a path during boot ('from=ask').
- The initialization of the graphical interface based on X.Org has been improved. When starting the X server, an option is now specified for automatically generating the configuration file.
