PipeWire is a multimedia server designed for real-time output and processing of audio and video streams. Clients are compatible with the PulseAudio, JACK, and ALSA APIs.

The new version is the first RC for version 1.0.

Key changes

• Support for jackdbus is enabled by default.
• IRQ-based scheduling in ALSA has been improved and is enabled by default for the Pro Audio profile. PCM devices are now linked to reduce latency, which aligns with JACK's behavior.
• Support for both old and new versions of webrtc-audio-processing has been implemented to ease the transition.
• Now, forcibly changing quantization through nodes or metadata also leads to forced pausing and resuming of the graph, similar to changing the bitrate, to ensure all nodes adapt to the new quantization. This is crucial for Pro Audio nodes that need to reconfigure equipment to the new period in IRQ-based scheduling.
• A bug in regex parsing has been fixed.
• Many small fixes and improvements.

PipeWire

• The stream now has an EARLY_PROCESS option that can be used to implement custom buffer filling.
• A bug in the driver node position detection has been fixed.
• Removing a link now correctly recalculates the graph.
• The comparison of bitrates for determining the best bitrate in the graph has been fixed.
• The malloc_trim() function is now used for memory release if available.

Utilities

• pw-cat now supports DFF and DSD formats.

Modules

• Some improvements have been made in RAOP. Device polling is now performed every two seconds to keep them operational.
• A bug in the filter chain has been fixed, where pre-amplification was not applied when mixing a single source.
• The filter chain can now pass flow volume to controls in the graph.
• Volume adjustment in RAOP has been improved.

PulseAudio

• Some fixes in pending_stream handling.
• A bug in event sending code has been fixed, which prevented the change event from being sent when a node was linked.
• The priority of real-time pulseaudio clients has been reduced.

SPA

• The ALSA driver now synchronizes all followers directly from wake-up events. This allows for more stable bitrate alignment.
• Support for GNU/Hurd has been added!

Bluetooth

• The performance of codecs has been improved when using PipeWire as an Audio Gateway.
• BAP devices have been adapted to the new Bluez API.

JACK

• If the jack library is in the default library path, avoid using LD_LIBRARY_PATH as it may lead to issues.
• Delays can now be reset to default values on the port.
• The jack_property now reliably updates metadata as it waits for bypasses before exiting.
