The company "Basil SPU" has released a new version of the operating system for educational institutions — "ALT Education" 10.2, built on the basis of the Tenth ALT platform (p10). The builds are prepared for x86_64, AArch64 (Baikal-M), and i586 platforms. The OS is designed for everyday use by preschool organizations, schools, universities, and specialized secondary educational institutions. The product is supplied under a Licensing Agreement, which allows free use by individuals, but legal entities are only permitted to conduct testing, and a commercial license must be acquired or a licensing agreement concluded in writing for use.
"ALT Education" enables the creation and integration of workstations for students, trainees, and teachers. The necessary software package can be selected during the OS installation or downloaded at any time from a special meta-package. The operating system provides centralized management of the classroom, automated simultaneous installation on multiple workstations, supports guest sessions, can operate in a heterogeneous network, and includes server video conferencing (based on Jitsi Meet), is compatible with educational web services and domestic software, and works with interactive whiteboards. During system installation, users can choose the Xfce 4.18 graphical environment (by default) or KDE Plasma 5.27. There is the option to download the R7-Office office suite from the R7 repository, compiled for operation in the "ALT" OS.
The main differences of "ALT Education" 10.2 from the previous version:
- A complete update of the package base of the distribution has been carried out. Among the versions of programs used are Perl 5.34, Python 3.9, PHP 8.0, Scribus 1.5, GIMP 2.10, Inkscape 1.2, Blender 2.93, Chromium 117.0, Glibc 2.32, GCC 10, and systemd 249.16;
- The Linux kernel 6.1 has been utilized;
- The ability to select a Wi-Fi network before entering a username when logging into the system has been added, if the KDE Plasma graphical environment is installed;
- The LibreOffice package has been updated to version 7.5 and moved to a separate installation item, with the addition of Belarusian localization, including spell checking, morphological analysis, and hyphenation.
- Tools have been added to help visually impaired people work with computers and the internet (Orca, Speech-dispatcher);
- The installer now includes a "Robotics" program group, which contains GZ-Simulator (a robotics simulator that mimics the operation of multiple robots in a 3D environment with dynamic interaction between objects) and Arduino (a programmable platform for developing electronic devices);
- A problem with name resolution being unavailable in certain networks has been fixed.
