Security researchers from Outpost24 have published the results of an analysis on the reliability of passwords used by IT system administrators. The study examined accounts found in the Threat Compass database, which collects information on password leaks resulting from malware activity and hacks. A collection of over 1.8 million passwords recovered from hashes related to administration interfaces (Admin portal) was assembled.
The study revealed that not only ordinary users but also administrators tend to choose predictable passwords. For instance, the most common password mentioned in the collected database over 40,000 times was 'admin'. This password's popularity is also attributed to its use as a default password on certain devices, where developers expect administrators to use a standard password for initial setup and then change it.
