After a year of development, a new release of the AWK programming language implementation from the GNU project has been introduced - Gawk 5.3.0. AWK was developed in the 1970s and has not undergone significant changes since the mid-80s, during which the core of the language was established, allowing it to maintain its original stability and simplicity for decades. Despite its age, AWK is still actively used by administrators for routine tasks involving the parsing of various types of text files and generating simple resulting statistics.
Key changes:
- Work has been done to ensure compatibility with BWK ('The One True Awk').
- The option '--csv' has been added for parsing CSV (comma-separated values) files.
- The ability to use escape sequences '\u' to represent multi-byte Unicode characters has been added.
- The use of the libsigsegv library has been discontinued.
- Support for output buffering when specifying PROCINFO['BUFFERPIPE'] has been added.
