The OBS Studio 30.0 livestreaming system has been released.

OBS Studio 30.0 has been released, a package for streaming, compositing, and video recording. The code is written in C/C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Builds are available for Linux (flatpak), Windows, and macOS.

The goal of developing OBS Studio was to create a portable version of the Open Broadcaster Software (OBS Classic) application, not tied to the Windows platform, supporting OpenGL and extensible through plugins. It also features a modular architecture, which implies a separation of the interface and the core of the program. It supports transcoding of source streams, capturing video during gaming, and streaming to PeerTube, Twitch, Facebook Gaming, YouTube, DailyMotion, Hitbox, and other services. For high performance, hardware acceleration mechanisms (e.g., NVENC, Intel QSV, and VAAPI) can be used.

Compositing support is provided based on arbitrary video streams, webcam data, video capture cards, images, text, application window content, or the entire screen. During broadcasting, switching between multiple predefined scene options is allowed (for example, to toggle views focusing on screen content and the webcam image). The program also provides tools for audio mixing, filtering using VST plugins, leveling volumes, and noise suppression.

Key changes:

  • The ability to stream video using WebRTC technology has been added, allowing content to be transmitted in a P2P mode directly to the user's browser without involving intermediaries. serverTo establish sessions between the broadcasting proxy server and the WebRTC client, the WHIP (WebRTC-HTTP Ingestion Protocol) has been used, replacing the FTL protocol, which will be deprecated next year. Key features of using WebRTC include:
    • Reduced latency in video delivery to fractions of a second, allowing for the creation of interactive content and real-time viewer engagement, such as hosting talk shows.
    • The ability to switch between networks without interrupting the stream (for example, switching from Wi-Fi to a mobile network).
    • Support for transmitting multiple video streams within a single session, for example, for filming from different angles or organizing interactive videos.
    • The possibility to upload multiple versions of already transcoded streams at different quality levels for users with varying bandwidth capacities, to avoid the need for transcoding on the server side.
    • Support for using different video codecs, such as H.265 and AV1, to reduce bandwidth requirements.
  • The layout of the status bar has been updated, with information now better structured. More intuitive and relevant icons have been implemented.
The OBS Studio 30.0 livestreaming system has been released.
  • The "Full-Height" option has been added, allowing dockable panels (embedded windows) to occupy the full height of the window, which is convenient for placing a chat panel on small laptop screens.
  • Support for Intel QSV (Quick Sync Video) technology has been added for hardware acceleration of video encoding and decoding in H264, HEVC, and AV1 formats on the Linux platform.
  • A safe mode has been implemented, where OBS starts without plugins, scripts, and web sockets. Booting into safe mode is offered after a crash is detected. This mode can also be enabled through the "Help" menu.
  • Added the ‘YouTube Live Control Room’ panel for streaming to YouTube.
  • For Decklink devices, support for capturing 10-bit video per color channel and playback with HDR has been implemented.
  • In the dropdown lists shown in the audio and video encoders, name sorting is enabled by default.
  • Support for arbitrary grouping of filters in drag & drop mode has been added.
  • Support for the MJPEG format with grayscale color transmission has been added to video capture modules via V4L and DirectShow.
  • IPv6 support with fallback to IPv4 for creating services that support both IPv6 and IPv4 has been implemented for streaming output via RTMP.
  • The ability to set FFmpeg settings for VAAPI has been added.
  • To reduce startup time on Windows, shader caching has been implemented.
  • On the macOS platform, the ability to capture sound from running applications has been introduced, the implementation of the virtual camera has been redesigned, and an option has been added to hide OBS windows when capturing the screen via the "Display Capture" function.
  • Support for Qt 5, Ubuntu 20.04, and FFmpeg versions prior to 4.4 has been discontinued.
