FreeBSD 14

A new version of the free UNIX-like operating system FreeBSD has been released.

Some changes:

  • Changes in the base system:

    • The default command shell for the superuser is now sh.
    • The default mail agent has been changed from sendmail to dragonfly mail agent;
    • The .include option in firejail.conf now supports search patterns.
    • Unicode support has been updated to version 14.0.
    • The base system no longer includes opie.
  • Changes in the kernel:

    • Support for up to 1024 cores is now available on arm64 and amd64 platforms.
    • A boottrace interface has been added, providing system call tracing during system boot and shutdown.
    • The ability to use MemorySanitizer from the LLVM project in the kernel on amd64 has been introduced; support for LLVM AddressSanitizer for arm64 and amd64 has also been added.
    • The timerfd system call has been added to improve compatibility with applications written for Linux.
  • Hypervisor bhyve:

    • The hypervisor now allows guests to access the host's TPM.
    • Improved GPU passthrough for Intel and AMD.
  • Support for cloud platforms:

    • FreeBSD can now run on Amazon AWS and Firecracker VMM platforms.
    • Support for paravirtualized network adapter on Azure has been added.
  • Support for hardware platforms:

    • Building installer images for the armv6 architecture has been discontinued.
    • Support for the MIPS architecture has been discontinued.
    • The special variant of the RISC-V port, riscv64sf, for 64-bit RISC-V processors without FPU has been discontinued; all current processors are now supported under the riscv64 port.
    • Starting with FreeBSD 15, developers plan to discontinue support for all 32-bit platforms; the 14/STABLE branch, which supports these platforms, will receive updates until 2028.
  • UFS file system:

    • Support for background file system checking using snapshot mechanisms has been added; this feature works on systems using soft updates.
    • Check hashes for superblocks, cylinder group headers, and inodes are now computed to facilitate damage detection; the code implementing this functionality, as well as the code for searching backup superblocks, has been moved from the user utility fsck_ffs to the libufs library.
  • The implementation of the ZFS file system, OpenZFS, has been updated to version 2.2:

    • The option vfs.zfs.bclone_enabled=1 allows for a reduction in block copies when copying a file; by default, this option is disabled.
    • Added an error log for array reconstruction, zpool scrub -e
    • Introduced the BLAKE3 checksum calculation algorithm.
    • zfs receive can recover damaged data.
    • Improved ARC mechanism.
    • The compression mechanism using the zstd algorithm now allows for quick block skipping when uncompressible data is detected.
