After 11 months of development, the release of the tool for multithreaded video file transcoding from one format to another — HandBrake 1.7.0 has been published. The program is available both in command-line mode and as a GUI interface. The project code is written in C (the Windows GUI is implemented in .NET) and is distributed under the GPL license. Binary builds are prepared for Linux (Flatpak), macOS, and Windows.
The program can transcode videos from BluRay/DVD disks, copies of VIDEO_TS directories, and any files whose format is supported by the libavformat and libavcodec libraries from FFmpeg. Output files can be generated in containers such as WebM, MP4, and MKV, and video encoding can use codecs like AV1, H.265, H.264, MPEG-2, VP8, VP9, and Theora, while audio can utilize AAC, MP3, AC-3, Flac, Vorbis, and Opus. Additional features include: bitrate calculator, preview during encoding, picture resizing and scaling, subtitle integration, and a wide range of conversion profiles for specified mobile device types.
In the new release:
- AV1 format encoders have been added, utilizing AMD VCN and NVIDIA NVENC engines for acceleration.
- Support for mult-pass AV1 encoding with adaptive bitrate (ABR) has been added using the SVT-AV1 library.
- Hardware presets for the Apple VideoToolbox API have been added. The Creator and Social presets have been updated.
- The ability to save metadata of the viewing environment has been added.
- Filters based on the Intel QSV (Quick Sync Video) API for rotation and format analysis have been added.
- Performance has been optimized on ARM64 and Apple Silicon systems.
- HEVC decoding has been accelerated.
- The bwdif filter has been accelerated by 30%.
- AV1 encoding performance has increased up to 4 times due to new assembly optimizations applied in SVT-AV1.
- Video conversion speed has improved due to the removal of unnecessary frame copies.
- The passing of Dolby Vision metadata regarding dynamic brightness range has been enhanced.
- An x265 encoder with 10-bit color channel support has been added.
- Dolby Vision profiles 8.4, 8.1, 7.6, and 5.0 have been added.
- Support for HDR10+ metadata passing has been improved when using x265 10-bit and SVT-AV1 encoders.
- Support for Intel QSV (Quick Sync Video) technology has been enhanced for hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding of video on Linux.
- When using NVENC technology, multi-pass encoding is disabled by default.
- Support for the Meson build system has been added.
