The release of Owncast 0.1.2 has been published, developing a server for video streaming (one broadcasts - many watch) and audience chat. The server runs on user hardware and, unlike Twitch, Facebook Live, and YouTube Live services, allows full control over the broadcasting process and setting your own chat rules. Management and interaction with users are conducted through a web interface. The project code is written in Go and is distributed under the MIT license.
For video transmission on server any software supporting the RTMP protocol can be used, for example, OBS, Streamlabs, Restream, Zoom, and Jitsi. Direct streaming is also possible by capturing video from a webcam or HDMI port using FFMpeg. The server receives the source video stream, converts it based on specified settings, and segments it for delivery to end users via the HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) protocol. Multiple streams of different quality can be generated with adaptive bitrate delivery. To optimize bandwidth, video can be transmitted to users utilizing storage services compatible with Amazon S3 as intermediaries.
The new version adds support for events when a user leaves the chat; request logging with rejected keys has been ensured; users are prohibited from using display names registered for chatbots through the API; a modal dialog has been implemented to request confirmations. Direct P2P connections are established whenever possible, but if not, it falls back to using relays, which are also employed for host discovery by keys.
