Candidate release Wine 9.0 and release vkd3d 1.10

Testing has begun for the first candidate release of Wine 9.0, the open-source implementation of WinAPI. The codebase has been frozen ahead of the release expected in the second half of January. Compared to the release of Wine 8.21, 52 bug reports have been closed, and 391 changes have been made.

The most significant changes:

  • The built-in vkd3d package, which implements Direct3D 12 via call translation to the Vulkan graphics API, has been updated to version 1.10.
  • Development has continued on the functionalities aimed at enabling the use of Wine in environments based on the Wayland protocol without relying on XWayland or X11 components. The winewayland.drv driver has gained support for keyboard layouts. Support for the Vulkan graphics API has been expanded, including functions vkQueuePresentKHR, vkGetDeviceGroupSurfacePresentModesKHR, and vkGetPhysicalDevicePresentRectanglesKHR. The ClipCursor function has been added, along with the ability to work with relative coordinates for mouse movement tracking.
  • Support for DH (Diffie-Hellman) encryption keys has been implemented using the latest GnuTLS releases.
  • Bug reports related to applications have been closed: Notepad, MS Word, Roon, eFilm Workstation 2.x/3.x, Athena’s Charm Table Search 0.35b, Process Explorer, Araxis Merge 2023.5877, Framemaker 8, Internet Download Manager, Air Jura, SpeedCommander, ModOrganizer, RestoreDC, Acid-V VST plugin, MIDITrail 1.4.0.
  • Bug reports related to games have been closed: For Honor, STEEP, Far Cry 5, NFS Most Wanted, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, Eurobattle, Daily Chthonicle, Crimson Skies.

Additionally, it is worth noting the release of the vkd3d 1.10 package by the Wine project, which implements Direct3D 12 via call translation to the Vulkan graphics API. The package includes the libvkd3d libraries for Direct3D 12, libvkd3d-shader for translating shader models 4 and 5, and libvkd3d-utils with functions to simplify the porting of Direct3D 12 applications, along with a set of demonstration examples, including the port of glxgears to Direct3D 12. The project code is distributed under the LGPLv2.1 license.

The libvkd3d library supports most capabilities of Direct3D 12, including graphics and compute tools, queues and command lists, descriptors and heap descriptors, root signatures, unordered access, samplers, command signatures, root constants, indirect rendering, and Clear*() and Copy*() methods. The libvkd3d-shader implements the translation of bytecode from shader models 4 and 5 to an intermediate representation SPIR-V. It supports vertex, pixel, tessellation, compute, and simple geometry shaders, as well as serialization and deserialization of root signatures. Shader instructions include arithmetic, atomic, and bitwise operations, comparison operators, and flow control, along with sample, gather, load instructions, and unordered access operations (UAV, Unordered Access View).

The new version continues to improve the HLSL (High-Level Shader Language) compiler provided since DirectX 9.0: support for dynamic array indexing has been added; the expressions "break", "continue", and "switch" have been introduced; expressions applicable for constant folding have been expanded; built-in functions ceil(), degrees(), radians(), fwidth(), tan(), tex2Dlod(), tex2Dproj(), texCUBEproj(), and tex3Dproj() have been implemented.

The libvkd3d library has added new Direct3D 12 interfaces (ID3D12Device5, ID3D12GraphicsCommandList5, and ID3D12Resource1) and implemented the ability to create pipeline state objects. The libvkd3d-utils provides auxiliary functions for manipulating DXBC: D3DGetBlobPart(), D3DGetDebugInfo(), D3DGetInputAndOutputSignatureBlob(), D3DGetInputSignatureBlob(), D3DGetOutputSignatureBlob(), and D3DStripShader(). The vkd3d-compiler has added the options "—fragment-coordinate-origin" and "—semantic-compat-map".
