The elections for OpenSUSE logos were held as part of an initiative to separate the branding of OpenSUSE and SUSE. Until now, the logos of SUSE and OpenSUSE were so similar that it created confusion, resembling phishing sites. Moreover, the old logo caused distress for owners of laser printers due to the overly bright color, and it turned into an unreadable form at a size of 48×48.
As a result, the logos were required to allow for project identification without text, based solely on the image.
