DB-Engines has updated its database popularity ranking and awarded PostgreSQL the title of Database of the Year 2023, which has shown the greatest increase in popularity over the past year among the 417 tracked systems. The second place was awarded to the cloud platform Databricks, which rose from 19th to 17th in the ranking, while the third place went to Google BigQuery, which moved up from 21st to 19th.
Previously, PostgreSQL was recognized as the Database of the Year in 2020, 2018, and 2017. In 2022 and 2021, this title was held by Snowflake, in 2019 by MySQL, in 2016 by Microsoft SQL Server, in 2015 by Oracle, and in 2013 and 2014 by MongoDB.
The methodology for calculating the database ranking is similar to the TIOBE programming language ranking and considers the popularity of queries in search engines, the number of results in search outputs, the volume of discussions on popular discussion platforms and social networks, the number of job vacancies in staffing agencies, and mentions in user profiles.
Regarding the distribution of databases in the ranking, PostgreSQL continues to hold 4th place, despite the highest overall increase in popularity—34.11 points. The project Databricks also shows growth in popularity (+19.7 points, rising from 19th to 17th), Google BigQuery (+9 points, from 21st to 19th), and Snowflake (+8.66 points, from 11th to 9th). Elasticsearch moved up from 8th to 7th place, Firebird from 33rd to 29th, ClickHouse from 44th to 37th, Prometheus from 62nd to 50th, OpenSearch from 48th to 42nd, and TimescaleDB from 85th to 76th.
A significant decline in popularity over the year has been observed for MySQL (-88.5 points), Microsoft SQL Server (-42.79), MongoDB (-37.70), Redis (-18.17), and SQLite (-16.29). IBM Db2 dropped from 7th to 8th place, SQLite from 10th to 11th, CouchDB from 43rd to 45th, and CockroachDB from 57th to 60th.
