MySQL Database Management System 8.3.0 is available.

Oracle has formed a new branch of the MySQL database management system, MySQL 8.3, and has released a corrective update, MySQL 8.0.36. Builds of MySQL Community Server 8.3.0 are prepared for all major Linux distributions, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows.

MySQL 8.3.0 is the third release formed under the new release model, which includes two types of MySQL branches — 'Innovation' and 'LTS'. Innovation branches, which include MySQL 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3, are recommended for those who want early access to new features. These branches are published every 3 months and are supported only until the release of the next significant version (for example, support for branch 8.2 ends after the release of branch 8.3). LTS branches are recommended for implementations that require predictability and long-term stability. LTS branches will be released every two years and will be supported for 5 years, with an option for an additional 3 years of extended support. The LTS release of MySQL 8.4 is expected in spring 2024, after which a new Innovation branch 9.0 will be formed.

Key changes in MySQL 8.3:

  • 25 vulnerabilities have been fixed, one of which (CVE-2023-5363, affecting OpenSSL) can be exploited remotely. The most serious issue related to the Kerberos protocol has been assigned a severity level of 8.8. Less severe vulnerabilities with a severity level of 6.5 affect the optimizer, UDF, DDL, DML, replication, privilege system, and encryption tools.
  • Support for the mold linker has been added on the Linux platform. The option '-DWITH_LD=mold|lld' must be enabled.
  • The requirements for the supported C++ standard have been raised from C++17 to C++20.
  • Support for building with external Boost C++ libraries has been discontinued — MySQL now uses only built-in Boost libraries during compilation. The build options WITH_BOOST, DOWNLOAD_BOOST, and DOWNLOAD_BOOST_TIMEOUT have been removed from CMake.
  • Support for building in Visual Studio 2022 has been discontinued. The minimum supported version of the Clang toolchain has been raised from Clang 10 to Clang 12.
  • Support for collecting telemetry data with performance metrics has been added in MySQL Enterprise Edition server in OpenTelemetry format and transmitting data to a compatible network handler.
  • The GTID (global transaction identifier) format has been extended, which is used in replication to identify groups of transactions. The new GTID format is "UUID::NUMBER" (instead of "UUID:NUMBER"), where TAG is an arbitrary string that allows for assigning unique names to a specific group of transactions for easier processing and parsing.
  • Two new variables, "Deprecated_use_i_s_processlist_count" and "Deprecated_use_i_s_processlist_last_timestamp," have been added to track the usage of the deprecated INFORMATION_SCHEMA.PROCESSLIST table.
  • Setting the environment variable AUTHENTICATION_PAM_LOG no longer results in passwords being displayed in diagnostic messages (to reference the password, the value PAM_LOG_WITH_SECRET_INFO must be assigned).
  • The tp_connections table has been added, containing information about each connection in the thread pool.
  • A system variable "explain_json_format_version" has been added to select the version of the JSON format used in "EXPLAIN FORMAT=JSON" statements.
  • The parameters "--innodb" and "--skip-innodb" have been removed from the InnoDB storage engine, which were declared deprecated back in MySQL 5.6. The memcached plugin for InnoDB, deprecated in MySQL 8.0.22, has also been removed.
  • Several deprecated replication-related settings and command-line options have been removed, including: "--slave-rows-search-algorithms," "--relay-log-info-file," "--relay-log-info-repository," "--master-info-file," "--master-info-repository," "log_bin_use_v1_events," "transaction_write_set_extraction," "group_replication_ip_whitelist," and "group_replication_primary_member." The use of the IGNORE_SERVER_IDS option with GTID replication mode (gtid_mode=ON) is no longer supported.
  • Support for C API functions: mysql_kill(), mysql_list_fields(), mysql_list_processes(), mysql_refresh(), mysql_reload(), mysql_shutdown(), mysql_ssl_set() has been discontinued.
  • Support for the statement "FLUSH HOSTS," which was deprecated in MySQL 8.0.23, has been discontinued.
