A year after the last release, version 2401 of the Redcore Linux distribution has been published, which attempts to combine the functionalities of Gentoo with ease of use for regular users. The distribution provides a simple installer that allows for a quick deployment of a working system without requiring the recompilation of components from source code. Users are given access to a repository of pre-built binary packages, supported by a continuous update cycle (rolling model). A custom package manager, sisyphus, is used to handle packages. An ISO image with the KDE desktop, sized at 4.5 GB (x86_64), is available for installation.
In the new version:
- The synchronization with the Gentoo testing tree as of January 21 has been completed.
- For installation, packages with the Linux kernel 6.6 (default), 6.1, and 5.15 are available to choose from.
- Components of the graphics stack have been updated to the latest versions of mesa, xorg, xwayland, and wayland.
- Package versions have been updated, including glibc 2.37, gcc 13.2.0, binutils 2.40, clang/llvm 17.0.6, and rust 1.74.1.
- Instead of PulseAudio, a multimedia manager is used for sound management. server PipeWire.
- Migration to OpenSSL 3 and ffmpeg 6 has been completed.
- By default, the Landlock protection mechanism is enabled, which restricts the interaction of a group of processes with the external environment.
- The sisyphus package manager has been rewritten, now fully separating the front end from the back end. When an incorrect package name is provided, recommendations with similar correct names are displayed. It is now possible to install packages without explicitly marking them as installed. Correct synchronization of settings between sisyphus and portage has been ensured.
