On January 27, the release of the console file manager Midnight Commander 4.8.31 was announced, distributed in source code under the GPLv3+ license.

List of major changes:

Support for the LZO/LZOP compression format has been added to VFS.
The virtual file system uc1541, providing access to disk images of Commodore VIC20/C64/C128, has been updated to version 3.6.
The implementation of the virtual file system s3+, used for accessing Amazon AWS S3 storage, has been ported to Python 3.
Support for server and the FISH protocol has been discontinued in VFS.
The GLib version requirements have been increased; now at least version 2.32.0 is required to operate.
Support for setting colors for highlighting in the editor of non-printable characters has been added to the themes.
Support for file attributes has been added in the ext2fs driver on the FreeBSD platform.
The issue with incorrect modification time being set after resuming a paused copy operation has been resolved.
In the editor, the removal of selected columns has been streamlined.
The issue with handling hard links has been resolved in Tar VFS.
The issue with file names containing Cyrillic or diacritic characters has been resolved in Shell VFS.
