As part of the preparation for the first public release under the MPL-2.0 open license, the source texts of the build tools and specific components of the Helios distribution, developed by Oxide Computer, have been made available.
The entire software stack of the Oxide platform is open source. The Helios distribution is based on the developments of the Illumos project, which continues the evolution of the kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, libraries, and the core set of system utilities of OpenSolaris.
The included components are:
- boot-image-tools — tools for creating boot images.
- helios-omnios-build, garbage-compactor — build scripts for the basic OS packages.
- helios-omnios-extra — build scripts for the extended package set.
- helios-omicron-brand — creating an isolated environment for running the Omicron management web interface.
- illumos-gate — system components from Illumos (kernel, libraries, utilities).
- phbl (Pico Host Boot Loader) — bootloader.
- pinprick — utility for compressing ROM images.
- image-builder — tools for creating boot disk images with Illumos.
- helios-engvm — tools for creating an environment for development and image creation of Helios on physical or virtual x86 systems running Ubuntu 20.04.01 with KVM/QEMU.
P.S.: Support for Solaris 11.4 has been extended by Oracle until 2037.
