After three months of development, the UBports project, which took over the development of the mobile platform Ubuntu Touch after Canonical distanced itself from it, has presented the OTA-4 Focal firmware (over-the-air). This is the fourth release of Ubuntu Touch, based on the package base of Ubuntu 20.04 (previous releases were based on Ubuntu 16.04). The project is also developing an experimental port of the Unity 8 desktop, which has been renamed to Lomiri.
The Ubuntu Touch OTA-4 Focal update will soon be available for Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, Fairphone 3/3+, 4, F(x)tec Pro1 X, Google Pixel 3a/3a XL, Vollaphone 22, Vollaphone X23, Vollaphone X, Vollaphone, JingPad A1, Oneplus One/5/6, Sony Xperia X, Samsung Galaxy S7, Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC/X3, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro Max, and 9S, Xiaomi Poco M2 Pro. Builds for Pine64 PinePhone, PinePhone Pro, PineTab, and PineTab2 are in beta testing.
Key changes in Ubuntu Touch OTA-4 Focal:
- Support for Oneplus One and Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones has been added.
- A setting has been added under 'System Settings > Security & Privacy > Locking and unlocking > When locked: > Hide notifications content' to hide the content of notifications when displayed during screen lock.
- During screen lock, the predicted time until battery charging completes is shown. To disable this information, there is a setting under 'System Settings > Battery > Show charging'.
- The built-in configurator ('System Settings > Background & Appearance') now allows switching between light and dark themes.
- Users can now assign a custom ringtone to each contact. The ringtone can be changed via the "Add field > Ringtone" button when editing the user profile.
- A confirmation prompt will display when trying to connect via adb debugger from a new computer that has not previously connected to the phone.
- The ability to bind custom vibration patterns to applications has been established. For example, two short vibrations can be set instead of one long for certain notifications.
- Stability of using Bluetooth headsets for voice calls has been improved.
- Settings for waking the phone with a double-tap (Double-tap-to-wake) are preserved between reboots.
- Issues with camera functionality after exiting Waydroid have been partially resolved.
- Vulnerabilities in the oFono telephone stack have been fixed, which could be exploited via SMS.
- The QtWebEngine browser engine has been updated to version 5.15.16.
- In the configurer (Lomiri System Settings), the layout of pages has been unified, the ability to remove previously added wallpaper has been provided, and a gesture sensitivity setting linked to the edges of the screen has been added.
- A function has been added to use the hardware button for taking camera snapshots.
