🥇Cygwin 3.5.0 Release, GNU Environment for Windows

Red Hat has released the stable version of the Cygwin 3.5.0 package, which includes a DLL library for emulating the basic Linux API on Windows, allowing Linux applications to be compiled with minimal changes. The package also includes standard Unix utilities, server applications, compilers, libraries, and header files directly compiled for Windows.

The release is notable for discontinuing support for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012. Thus, Cygwin 3.5.0 supports only Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2022.

Other changes:

Access to console devices (/dev/consN) from processes attached to other consoles or pty terminals has been enabled. This change allows the GNU screen and tmux utilities to run in the console.
The newgrp utility has been added to change the group identifier in the current session.
The cygcheck utility has been enhanced to support package searching in the Cygwin distribution and to obtain information about available and installed packages.
The fnmatch and glob functions have been updated to allow specification of character classes in the definitions of masks (e.g., ‘[:alnum:]’, ‘[=a=]’, ‘[.aa.]’).
A /dev/disk directory has been added with subdirectories ‘by-*’ which are symbolic links to disk and partition devices:

The /proc/codesets and /proc/locales files have been added, containing information about supported encodings and locales.

The lseek function has been updated to support the SEEK_DATA and SEEK_HOLE flags.

New functions close_range, fallocate, c8rtomb, c16rtomb, c32rtomb, mbrtoc8, mbrtoc16, mbrtoc32, posix_spawn_file_actions_addchdir_np, and posix_spawn_file_actions_addfchdir_np have been implemented.

A /dev/mixer device has been added, implementing a sound mixer.

NFS sections now support FIFO channels.

Automatic optimization of sparse files for SSD drives has been enabled, independent of the mounting mode.

The default value of RLIMIT_CORE is set to 0, disabling core dump and stack state file generation.
