The Xfce developers have updated their page regarding plans to add support for the Wayland protocol. The plan now mentions the implementation of basic Wayland support in the components of the upcoming major release Xfce 4.20 while maintaining support for X11. Previously, the issue of preserving backward compatibility with X11 was under discussion, and consensus had not been reached. It has now been decided that support for X11 will not be discontinued in the foreseeable future.
The Wayland session in Xfce 4.20 will cover the minimally required set of features, with plans to gradually add missing functionality as future releases are prepared. Additionally, there are plans to continue refining work within the Wayland protocol environment in already ported user applications.
It is noted that the project lacks resources to maintain its own composite manager for Wayland, but the possibility of using bindings to XWayland has been rejected. The previously made decision to use the wlroots library, developed by the Sway user environment team and providing basic functions for organizing the work of a composite manager on Wayland, remains unchanged.
The xfdesktop desktop and the xfce4-panel have already been ported to Wayland with the use of wlroots and will continue to develop as separately launched components. The xfce4-panel has been tested with composite managers Labwc and Wayfire. servers To abstract the work over Wayland and X11, the libxfce4windowing library is employed, providing a layer for abstraction from the graphical subsystem in which window management components (screens, root windows, virtual workspaces, etc.) are implemented, independent of any specific window system. Also noted among the components ported to Wayland are: exo, libxfce4ui, libxfce4util, thunar, xfce4-appfinder, xfce4-settings, xfconf, xfce4-power-manager, tumbler, garcon, thunar-volman, and xfce4-dev-tools. Currently, Wayland support is absent in the xfce4-session manager and the xfwm4 window manager, but there is an unofficial port of xfwm4 for working with Wayland.
Among the applications that have added support for Wayland are: xfce4-terminal, mousepad, xfce4-notifyd, xfce4-taskmanager, xfce4-mixer, ristretto, catfish, xfburn, parole, xfmpc, xfce4-dict, gigolo, and xfce4-panel-profiles. Applications that currently do not work with Wayland include: xfdashboard, xfce4-screenshooter, xfce4-screensaver, and xfce4-volumed-pulse.
