The Xfce developers have updated the roadmap regarding Wayland support. The discontinuation of X support in Xfce will not happen (at least not in 4.20). The library will be used as the 'core' of Wayland in Xfce. wlroots.
Desktop xfdesktop and panel xfce4-panel have been ported for Wayland and provide full Wayland support. The following components also have full Wayland support: exo, libxfce4ui, libxfce4util, thunar, xfce4-appfinder, xfce4-settings, xfconf, xfce4-power-manager, tumbler, garcon, thunar-volman, and xfce4-dev-tools. As of this writing, Wayland support is absent in the xfce4-session window manager and the xfwm4 window manager.
Xfce applications that support Wayland include: xfce4-terminal, mousepad, xfce4-notifyd, xfce4-taskmanager, xfce4-mixer, ristretto, catfish, xfburn, parole, xfmpc, xfce4-dict, gigolo, and xfce4-panel-profiles. Applications that currently do not work with Wayland include: xfdashboard (Stage Manager from GNOME), xfce4-screenshooter (screenshot application), xfce4-screensaver, and xfce4-volumed-pulse.
The plan is to minimally enhance full support for Wayland in Xfce by the release of 4.20.
In addition to Xfce, work on Wayland support is underway in MATE and Cinnamon.
