In the nightly builds of Firefox, on which Firefox 124 will be based and released on March 19, the ability to display page thumbnails when hovering over tabs has been added. In addition to the thumbnail, the tooltip information block for the tab also includes a mention of the link displayed in the tab. The display of the link in the tooltip over the tab will appear in version Firefox 123, planned for February 20.
By default, the thumbnail preview is disabled and requires activating the setting "browser.tabs.cardPreview.enabled" in about:config. To manage the delay before the thumbnail appears, a setting called "browser.tabs.cardPreview.delayMs" has been added, which is set to 1000 ms by default, meaning the cursor must hover over the tab button for at least one second for the hint to appear.
Notable changes in the nightly builds include:
- The time to restore a large number of tabs after a restart has been reduced.
- The Reader View mode has been improved, with the application disabled for Slack, the estimated reading time formatting updated, and the performance enhanced when selecting a dark theme.
- Performance on the Linux platform has been boosted (with increases in tests from 2% to 11%) due to the disabling of some unnecessary protections against Spectre and Meltdown attacks in isolation mode.
