The release of Regolith Desktop 3.1 has been announced, developed by the creators of the eponymous Linux distribution. Regolith is based on GNOME session management technologies, the i3 window manager, the Picom and Sway composite servers, the i3bar panel, the rofication notification system, the i3status-rs status line, and the ilia application launcher. Project developments are distributed under the GPLv3 license. Packages for Ubuntu and Debian are prepared for download.
The project is positioned as a modern desktop environment designed for faster execution of standard tasks through optimization of workflows and elimination of unnecessary clutter. The goal is to provide a functional, yet minimalist interface that can be customized and expanded based on user preferences. Regolith may be of interest to newcomers accustomed to traditional window systems, but wishing to try tiled (mosaic) window arrangement methods.
In the new release:
- The session using Wayland is adapted for use in Debian Testing. Wayland support is provided only for Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian Testing, and Debian 12. For Ubuntu 20.04 and Debian 11, only the X11-based session is supported.
- Support for Ubuntu 23.10 has been added.
- The interface for switching between virtual desktops, i3-next-workspace, has been ported to work with the composite proxy server Sway.
- The regolith-control-center configurator has been migrated to the codebase from GNOME 45.
- The session based on the composite server Sway has transitioned from the alpha version to the beta testing stage.
