The developers of the collaborative development platform Forgejo have announced a change in their development model. Instead of maintaining a synchronized fork of Gitea, the Forgejo project has now diverged into a fully independent codebase that will develop autonomously and follow its own path. It is noted that this complete fork culminates in the divergence of development and management models between Forgejo and Gitea.
The Forgejo project originated in October 2022 as a result of a "soft" fork of Gitea. The management of Forgejo is conducted by hosting Codeberg.org. The project code is written in Go and is licensed under MIT. The fork was created in response to attempts to commercialize Gitea and the transfer of management to a commercial company. Forgejo continues to apply the principles of independent governance and maintains community oversight. Until now, Forgejo regularly incorporated all code changes from Gitea while also adding its own new features that are absent in Gitea. As more of its own features were added to Forgejo, the process of synchronizing the codebases became increasingly complicated.
The complete separation will simplify maintenance, promote new functionality, and fix bugs, as well as accelerate the reduction of technical debt and allow for resource savings spent on analyzing conflicts with changes emerging in the Gitea codebase. The price of complete branching will be the inability to use Forgejo as a transparent replacement for Gitea and the complication of transitioning from Gitea to Forgejo. At the same time, the API in Forgejo will be kept compatible with the Gitea API whenever possible.
