Google has introduced the first test version of the open mobile platform Android 15. The release of Android 15 is expected in the third quarter of 2024. A beta testing program has been proposed to evaluate the new features of the platform. Firmware builds have been prepared for Pixel 6/6a/6 Pro, Pixel 7/7a/7 Pro, Pixel 8/8a/8 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.
Key innovations in Android 15 Developer Preview 1:
- The advertising services for mobile applications (Android AD Services) utilize the latest developments from the Privacy Sandbox project, aimed at creating techniques for personalizing ad displays without compromising user privacy (determining the user's general interest categories without individual identification).
- The Health Connect storage has added support for new types of data used in sports activities and nutrition tracking. For instance, fields for tracking the average number of steps taken and trans fat consumption have been added. Health Connect ensures centralized data storage from fitness trackers and other health-related devices and organizes the shared access of different apps to health data.
- The FileIntegrityManager API has added support for the Linux kernel-provided fs-verity mechanism for transparent integrity and authenticity verification of individual files using cryptographic signatures associated with files, stored in the metadata area.
- The screen sharing API has been enhanced with the ability to capture individual application windows instead of the entire screen content.
- The capabilities for camera control and image processing algorithms have been expanded. Specifically, parameters for increasing brightness in low light conditions and adjusting flash intensity have been added.
- The ability to create applications with musical instruments and synthesizers, appearing to other applications as virtual MIDI devices adhering to the MIDI 2.0 specification, has been implemented.
- The development of the API for dynamic performance management — ADPF (Android Dynamic Performance Framework) — has continued, allowing monitoring of energy consumption and temperature in games and resource-intensive applications.
- A power-efficiency mode has been added, which prioritizes energy consumption savings over performance when executing threads (for example, this can be used for long-running background tasks).
- The ability to transmit combined information on GPU and CPU usage has been provided, allowing the system to adjust the frequency of the GPU and CPU or thread affinity to cores based on the overall load.
- A getThermalHeadroomThresholds method has been added to output information about temperature regulation status considering forecasted values.
