Experts from the German National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity, ATHENE, have reported a dangerous vulnerability in the DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) mechanism — a set of extensions to the DNS protocol. This flaw theoretically allows for the incapacitation of a DNS server through a DoS attack. The research involved staff from Goethe University Frankfurt, the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer SIT), and the Technical University of Darmstadt.
