The developers of the LXQt user environment (Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment) shared insights on the transition to the use of the Qt6 library and the Wayland protocol. The migration to Qt6 is currently viewed as a primary task that is receiving the project's full attention. Once the migration is complete, support for Qt5 will be completely discontinued.
The results of the porting to Qt6 will be presented in the LXQt 2.0.0 release, scheduled for April of this year. In addition to internal changes, the new branch will feature a new default application menu called 'Fancy Menu', which not only categorizes applications but also has a mode to show all applications in a summary view, along with a list of frequently used applications. Furthermore, the new menu enhances searching capabilities.
It is noted that the implementation of Wayland support will not lead to conceptual changes: the project will remain modular and continue to adhere to a classic desktop organization. Similar to the support for various window managers, LXQt will work with all compositing managers based on the wlroots library, developed by the Sway user environment team, which provides the essential functions for organizing the work of a Wayland-based compositing manager. The functionality of LXQt using Wayland has been tested with the compositing managers labwc, wayfire, kwin_wayland, sway, and Hyprland. The best results were achieved when using labwc.
Currently, the panel, desktop, file manager (PCmanFM-qt), image viewer (LXimage-qt), privilege management system (PolicyKit), volume control component (pavucontrol, PulseAudio Volume Control), and global hotkey handler have been fully ported to Qt6. The session manager, notification system, power management mechanism, configurator (for managing appearance, screen, input devices, locales, file associations), interface for viewing running processes (Qps), terminal emulator (QTerminal), screenshot tool (Screengrab), program launcher (Runner), wrapper over sudo, SSH password prompt interface (LXQt Openssh Askpass), FreeDesktop portal system (XDG Desktop Portal), and the interface for managing system settings and users (LXQt Admin) have not yet been ported to Qt6.
Regarding readiness to work with the Wayland protocol, most of the aforementioned LXQt components have already been ported to Wayland to some extent. Support for Wayland is currently absent only in the screen configurator, screenshot tool, and global keyboard shortcut handler. The wrapper over sudo is not planned to be ported to Wayland.
