RED SOFT has released a new version of the Linux distribution called RED OS 8.
- The distribution is currently available for 64-bit x86-compatible processors.
- The distribution includes the Linux kernel 6.6.6.
- Available desktop environments include GNOME 44, KDE (Plasma 5.27), MATE 1.26, and Cinnamon 4.8.1.
- Unlike many distributions, the repository offers various versions of the same software (specifically, both Python 2 and 3.11; both OpenJDK 8 and 21 are available).
- A support period of just under five years is planned (until the end of 2028).
The distribution is based on RPM package format. According to the developers, RED OS is built from the source code of Open Source projects and proprietary developments. The package builds are performed according to custom specifications or those of Open Source projects. All specifications used are adapted to ensure compatibility with the RED OS package base. RED OS development is carried out within a closed framework of the RED SOFT company. The source codes and packages are stored in RED OS's own repository, located in the Russian Federation.
Source codes and src.rpm packages are not publicly available.
Distribution is commercial, but is available for free use by individuals and legal entities. Legal entities must purchase a license after completing the 'study and testing' phase, just like users who use the distribution for commercial purposes.
Instructions for upgrading from the previous version 7.3 are provided by RED SOFT only with a purchased support plan.
The main users of RED OS are government structures of the Russian Federation and state-owned companies. From February 23, 2024, RED SOFT is under U.S. sanctions.
