The "waste" heat from the new Microsoft data center being built in Denmark will be used to heat up to 6,000 homes. Datacenter Dynamics reports that the data center is being constructed in the municipality of Høje-Taastrup, located 25 km from Copenhagen — it is one of three facilities being built for the Azure zone announced back in 2020. It is expected to be operational this fall. Two more data centers are being built in Roskilde and Køge. The warm water from the cooling systems of the data center will be used by VEKS, which is developing district heating systems around Copenhagen in collaboration with Høje Taastrup Fjernvarme (HTF). VEKS and Microsoft anticipate that the first "batches" of heat from the data center will reach residents during the heating season of 2025–2026. Additionally, Microsoft has promised to create a recreational park.
