A serious error has been found in the logic of the Bcachefs file system in Linux kernel 6.7, which manifests in configurations with multiple storage devices when using new versions of file system creation tools. The problem is that a situation can arise where the file system tries to update its version, and this will not be completed; subsequently, the kernel may try to downgrade the file system to an older version — and as a result of this interaction, serious corruption of the file system can occur.
Currently, all Bcachefs users with more than one device are recommended to upgrade to kernel 6.8 because the proposed fixes have not been accepted into the 6.7 branch due to non-compliance with the accompanying requirements (fixes for different issues were submitted in one pull request without separation into individual patches). Over time, a rescan mechanism will be implemented for rebuilding trees from inode metadata, ensuring recovery even in such situations.
