The first alpha version of the etcd-operator project has been released, developing tools to simplify the deployment of the etcd distributed storage in a Kubernetes environment and to manage etcd clusters. The tools can handle tasks such as deploying nodes, configuration, management, scaling, and recovery in case of failures. The configuration is specified in YAML format. The project's code is written in Go and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
The project was created as part of an experiment to organize people in the Russian-speaking Kubernetes community and to establish an initiative group for writing a fully open and community-managed etcd-operator. The essence of the experiment is to create a project from scratch that will develop within the community and to test the applicability of international collaborative development practices within the Russian-speaking community.
The choice of etcd is due to the fact that it is both a simple and in-demand technology used in many projects. Among the main users are the Cozystack and Kamaji projects, focused on deploying Kubernetes clusters in the native Kubernetes ecosystem. Currently, the project has a separate community of 100 members and about 10 regular contributors.
The project has two main objectives:
- The desire to create a standard solution that will not be under the control of any company.
- The intention to help the Russian-speaking community learn to work together with their Western colleagues to achieve common goals, as well as to adopt their best practices for open development.
The project has already submitted a request to join Kubernetes-SIGs. Currently, there is also active discussion about the possibility of adopting the etcd-operator under the main etcd project.
