iXsystems has announced plans for further development of the distribution for quick deployment of the TrueNAS CORE network storage, continuing the FreeNAS project. In June, a release of TrueNAS CORE 13.3 based on FreeBSD 13.3 is planned (the previous release was based on FreeBSD 13.0 and was formed in 2021), OpenZFS 2.2.3, and Samba 4.19. Further development will focus solely on the TrueNAS SCALE distribution, which uses the Linux kernel and Debian package base.
The TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS SCALE projects will continue to coexist, but the TrueNAS CORE branch will be transitioned to maintenance mode, where it is planned to fix bugs and security issues for many more years. New features and new versions of components will be developed in the TrueNAS SCALE branch. There are no plans to form a TrueNAS CORE release based on FreeBSD 14.
