Canonical has announced a 12-year update formation period for Ubuntu LTS releases. This extension will affect all current LTS releases, starting with Ubuntu 14.04, whose support was set to expire in April this year but has now been extended to April 2026. Updates for Ubuntu 24.04 will be available until 2036, Ubuntu 22.04 until 2034, Ubuntu 20.04 until 2032, and so on. As before, updates will be publicly available for 5 years after the release, and the remaining 7 years will only be provided to users of the Ubuntu Pro service.
The Ubuntu Pro service is paid for commercial use. For personal use, there is an option for free access to Ubuntu Pro for extended updates for 5 machines. Official members of the Ubuntu Community can receive extended updates for 50 machines at no cost.
As for other distributions, a 14-year support period is provided for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (10 years + 4 years of additional paid service), SUSE Linux is supported for 13 years (10 General + 3 LTSS), Debian GNU/Linux is supported for 7 years (5 years LTS + 2 years Extended LTS), openSUSE is supported for 18 months, and Fedora Linux for 13 months.
