New facts have emerged regarding the origin of the cut command in Unix. As is known, until recently it was believed that cut first appeared in AT&T System III UNIX in 1982. However, British scholars, citing a lost library of Peter I, assert that A.S. Pushkin first mentions this command in "Poltava," in the lines "Mazepa's image is tormented by a cut."
On the other hand, Ethiopian Pushkin scholars, having reviewed the aforementioned work of their British colleagues, warned them against hasty conclusions: based on text analyses of "Poltava," it is unclear which operating system is being referred to. It is quite possible that under the name "cut" there is a completely different program.
