Alexander Schwinn, who is involved in the development of the Xfce desktop environment and the Thunar file manager, attempted to estimate the approximate number of Xfce users. By assessing the popularity of major Linux distributions, it was concluded that around 14 million users are working with Xfce. The following assumptions were used in the calculation:
- The total number of Linux users is estimated to be 120 million.
- Approximately 33% of Linux users use Ubuntu or its based distributions on their PCs. Thus, the total number of Ubuntu users is 40 million (nine years ago, according to Canonical, there were 20 million users). According to a survey, about 15% of Ubuntu users install Xubuntu, which amounts to 6 million users of Xubuntu (15% of 40 million).
- If we assume that 10% of users of distributions other than Ubuntu use Xfce, that would result in an additional 8 million users (10% of 80 million).
- Approximately 6,000 developer accounts are registered on gitlab.xfce.org, meaning every 2000th user is registered there.
