On April 5, 2024, Cloudflare introduced the first public release of the open-source project Pingora v0.1.0 (now v0.1.1). This is an asynchronous multi-threaded framework in Rust that helps create HTTP proxy services. The project is used to deliver a significant portion of traffic at Cloudflare (instead of using Nginx). The source code of Pingora is published on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license.
Pingora provides libraries and APIs for building services on top of HTTP/1 and HTTP/2, TLS, or simply TCP/UDP. As a proxy,server it supports end-to-end HTTP/1 and HTTP/2 proxying, gRPC, and WebSocket. Support for HTTP/3 is planned. Pingora also includes customizable load balancing and failover strategies. To meet compliance and security requirements, it supports both widely used OpenSSL and BoringSSL libraries, which comply with FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) and post-quantum encryption requirements.
In addition to these features, Pingora offers filters and callbacks, enabling users to fully customize how the service should handle, transform, and forward requests.
In production mode, Pingora ensures seamless restarts with no downtime for self-updating, without losing any incoming requests. Syslog, Prometheus, Sentry, OpenTelemetry, and other essential monitoring tools can be easily integrated with Pingora.
Pingora capabilities include the use of Async Rust, end-to-end HTTP/1/2 proxy support, TLS over OpenSSL or BoringSSL, gRPC, WebSocket proxying, graceful reloads, customizable load balancing and failover strategies, and support for various monitoring tools.
Version Pingora v0.1.1 addressed previously found bugs, improved the performance of the pingora-ketama algorithm, added more TinyUFO benchmarks and tests for pingora-cache purge, limited the buffer size for InvalidHTTPHeader error logs, and corrected typos along with necessary adjustments in the comments and documentation of the project.
