In the nightly builds of Firefox, which will form the release of Firefox 126 on May 14, there is now an option for automated machine translation of text fragments highlighted on the page (previously, only full-page translation was supported). The translation function is accessed through the context menu that appears when right-clicking on the selected block of text. To enable fragment translation, a new setting has been added in about:config: browser.translations.select.enable, which is disabled by default.
Additionally, in the nightly builds, translation to Russian, Ukrainian, and Estonian languages is available, which can only be used as source languages in stable builds. The built-in translation system in Firefox translates on the user's local system without accessing external cloud services. This system is based on the open-source Bergamot engine, which serves as a wrapper for the Marian machine translation framework that employs recurrent neural networks (RNN) and transformer-based language models.
