Release of the Lutris 0.5.17 platform to simplify access to games from Linux.

The release of the gaming platform Lutris 0.5.17 has been published, providing tools to simplify the installation, configuration, and management of games on Linux. The project's code is written in Python and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Ready-to-use builds are available in flatpak format.

The project supports a catalog for quick searching and installation of gaming applications, allowing users to launch games on Linux with a single click through a unified interface, without worrying about dependency installations and settings. The runtime components required for game execution are provided by the project and are not tied to the distribution used. The runtime is a distribution-independent set of libraries, including components from SteamOS and Ubuntu, as well as various additional libraries.

It allows for the installation of games distributed through services like GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Amazon Games, Origin, and Uplay. Lutris itself acts only as an intermediary and does not sell games, so for commercial titles, users must purchase the game from the respective service (free games can be launched with one click from the Lutris graphical interface).

Each game in Lutris is associated with a loading script and handler describing the environment for launching the game. Ready-made profiles with optimal settings for running games under Wine are also provided. In addition to Wine, games can be launched using console emulators such as RetroArch, Dosbox, FS-UAE, ScummVM, MESS/MAME, and Dolphin.

Among the changes in the new version:

  • Support has been added for launching games using Supermodel, a Sega Model 3 platform emulator that allows for the execution of some classic arcade games.
  • Support for the Vita3k emulator has been added, enabling the launch of games created for the Sony PlayStation Vita console.
  • Support for game synchronization, game statistics, and game categories across multiple devices has been added using the service at lutris.net.
  • The 'Lutris' screen has been replaced with 'Games', which utilizes new library synchronization features.
  • Experimental support for Umu mode has been added, allowing the use of Proton and Pressure Vessel (a system for running games in separate containers) without being tied to the Steam service.
  • Game sorting has been improved (the sorting by game duration and last played time has been inverted).
  • When selecting multiple games, the option to use the 'Categories' command for them has been provided.
  • In Cemu, the Nintendo Wii U console emulator, support for WUA format files has been added.
  • When the 'Show Hidden Games' option is enabled, hidden games are now displayed in a separate section and hidden again after viewing.
  • Support for PNG files with transparent backgrounds has been added in banners and covers.
  • Support for libstrangle and xgamma has been deprecated.
