The OpenBSD codebase has adopted a change that makes the tar utility use the PAX format by default when creating archives. This change will be included in the OpenBSD 7.6 release. Using the PAX format will allow for longer file names, better handling of links, more accurate time information, and the ability to include very large files in the archive.
The downsides of switching to PAX include an increase in the size of uncompressed archives and limited support for the format within the ecosystem. To revert to the old behavior and save archives in the TAR format, it is recommended to specify the option ‘-F ustar’ when calling the tar utility.
