GitHub has published changes to its rules that define the policy on hosting projects that can be used to create false multimedia content for pornography and misinformation. The changes are currently in draft form and available for discussion for 30 days (until May 20).
The terms of service of GitHub now include a paragraph prohibiting the hosting of projects that enable the synthesis and manipulation of multimedia content to create intimate images without consent (NCII) and content aimed at misleading or misinformation. The ban also extends to projects that promote and support such systems.
As a reason for the ban, attempts to use artificial intelligence systems capable of generating realistic images, sound, and video are mentioned, not only for creativity but also for abuse, such as creating deepfakes and organizing spam calls. At the same time, GitHub representatives intend to be lenient towards dual-use projects that are not directly intended for abuse and do not endorse harmful applications but could potentially be misused by bad actors in their activities.
