Ryan Marcus, the developer of the experimental Bao optimizer for PostgreSQL that utilizes machine learning to optimize query execution, published the results of performance testing of the built-in query optimizer of PostgreSQL. The testing covered PostgreSQL branches from 8.4 (2009) to 16 (2023). Performance was measured using the JOB (join order benchmark) collection, which includes over 100 complex queries involving numerous JOIN operations, aimed at evaluating various aspects of the query optimizer's performance.
Compared to PostgreSQL 8.4, the execution speed of test queries in PostgreSQL 16 has nearly doubled. Each new major version of PostgreSQL has been, on average, 15% faster than the previous one in JOB tests.
