The company iXsystems has released the TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 distribution, which uses the Linux kernel and a Debian package base (previously released products from this company, including TrueOS, PC-BSD, TrueNAS, and FreeNAS, were based on FreeBSD). Like TrueNAS CORE (FreeNAS), TrueNAS SCALE can be downloaded and used for free. The size of the ISO image is 1.5 GB. The source code for TrueNAS SCALE-specific build scripts, web interface, and layers has been published on GitHub.
The Linux-based TrueNAS SCALE edition is now the primary version, while the FreeBSD-based TrueNAS CORE branch has been moved to a maintenance mode where it will continue to fix bugs and security issues for many years. New features and new versions of components will only be developed in the TrueNAS SCALE branch. TrueNAS SCALE is not the only Linux-based alternative to FreeNAS; in 2009, the OpenMediaVault distribution branched off from FreeNAS and transitioned to a Linux kernel and a Debian package base.
Notable features of TrueNAS SCALE include the ability to create storage hosted on multiple nodes, while TrueNAS CORE (FreeNAS) was positioned as a solution based on a single server. In addition to increased scalability, TrueNAS SCALE also distinguishes itself by using isolated containers and simplifying... for infrastructure management and suitability for creating software-defined infrastructures. The ZFS (OpenZFS) file system is used in TrueNAS SCALE. TrueNAS SCALE provides support for Docker containers, KVM-based virtualization, and ZFS scaling across multiple nodes using the distributed file system Gluster.
To organize access to storage, SMB, NFS, iSCSI Block Storage, S3 Object API, and Cloud Sync are supported. For secure access, connections can be made via VPN (OpenVPN). Storage can be deployed on a single node and then gradually horizontally scaled by adding additional nodes as needs grow. In addition to handling storage management tasks, nodes can also be used to provide services and run applications in containers orchestrated by the Kubernetes platform or in KVM-based virtual machines.
In the new version:
- Updated versions of the Linux kernel 6.6.20, OpenZFS 2.2.3, and NVIDIA driver 545.23.08. The package base is synchronized with Debian 12.
- New pages for tracking the status of SMB and NFS sessions and managing them have been proposed.
- An interface for viewing audit logs related to SMB client operations, account actions, and authorizations has been added.
- Support for configurations based on a centralized system for identifying FreeIPA users has been added to the fields processed via LDAP accounts.
- Support for isolated environments, SCALE Sandboxes, similar to LXC containers in Linux and jail environments in FreeBSD has been added.
- A developer mode has been proposed for fine-tuning TrueNAS.
- A new dashboard widget for monitoring and quickly performing actions related to backups has been added.
- The Netdata interface (Reporting > Netdata) for analyzing system performance has been added.
- The forms for creating shared access sections have been redesigned.
- The backup creation form for cloud storage has been revamped.
- The implementation of the Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC) in ZFS has been updated to enhance read operation performance.
- New privilege levels have been added for delegating specific administrative capabilities to users.
- Performance has been improved for SMB shares containing a large number of files.
- Support for data import into SMB shares from external systems has been added, using the file synchronization system Syncthing.
- Quality control has been enhanced. The release of TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 is noted as the most stable release in the history of the project.
