The developers of the Servo browser engine, written in Rust, announced that the project has reached a level that allows it to successfully pass the Acid2 tests used to verify support for web standards in web browsers. The Acid2 tests were created in 2005 and assess basic capabilities of CSS and HTML4, as well as the correctness of PNG image support with transparent backgrounds and the 'data:' URL scheme. Additionally, Mozilla's initiative to rewrite the Crash Reporter component in Firefox in Rust can be highlighted. Crash Reporter tracks crashes of the main Firefox process and displays a dialog for sending a report to the browser developers. The need to redesign Crash Reporter arose due to maintenance issues with the old codebase that hindered further development and the preparation of changes because of having three separate implementations of the graphical interface (for Windows, Linux, and macOS) and using additional layers in Objective-C for macOS.
The new version provides a unified interface across all platforms and utilizes Rust to reduce the likelihood of memory errors, enhance reliability, and simplify maintenance. A cross-platform GUI, independent of Firefox, is created using an abstraction layer with basic interface elements implemented atop GTK, Win32 API, and Cocoa to give the interface a native look for each platform.
