For the first time since 2018, a new stable release of the Amarok music player has been made available. This is the first stable version based on Qt5/KDE Frameworks 5.
The path to version 3.0 has been long. Most of the work to port to Qt5/KF5 was done back in 2015, followed by a slow polish and refinement, intermittently stopping and restarting. The alpha version 3.0 was released in February 2001 and was used by many people, as were the nightly builds from git master available in various distributions. Now, in the last few months, all efforts have been made to prepare a full release.
In the coming months, minor releases with small fixes and additions inspired by both new and existing bug reports and feature requests can be expected. Work on porting Amarok to Qt6/KDE Frameworks 6 will start in the next few months, aiming to have a usable version by the end of 2024.
Since the transition of the scripting framework from QtScript to QJSEngine is still in progress, previous scripts from Amarok 2.x are often incompatible with the new version. The documentation for the scripting API on the community wiki is also partially outdated. Additionally, due to incompatibility and other issues, script loading in KNewStuff is currently disabled. Work on script support will be conducted after the release of a usable version with Qt6/KF6. Some information on the website and the articles in the community wiki, primarily written over ten years ago, is also outdated. Some work to update and streamline the documentation will be done over the next few months.
