🥇Valve has released Proton 9.0, a package for running Windows games in Linux

Valve has released the stable version of Proton 9.0, based on the Wine codebase, aimed at enabling the launch of Windows games in Linux that are available in the Steam catalog. The project's developments are distributed under the BSD license.

Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.

Changes in the new version of Proton include:

Synchronization with the Wine 9.0 release has been completed. The accumulated specific patches from Proton have been merged into the main Wine composition.
The DXVK layer, which translates calls to the Vulkan API, has been updated to version 2.3.
VKD3D-Proton, a branch of vkd3d created by Valve to improve Direct3D 12 support in Proton, has been updated to version 2.11.1.
The Dxvk-nvapi package, which implements the NVAPI library on top of DXVK, has been updated to version 0.6.4.
Support for Steamworks SDK 1.59 has been added.
