The release of the Lacmus 1.0 program "Furious Vaporization" has taken place. This project is a cross-platform solution for automating the search and rescue of missing people using computer vision algorithms and AI. The project is written in C# and is distributed under the GPLv3 license, with its development spanning over five years in close collaboration with the community of search and rescue teams.
The Lacmus software suite allows for automated searches through photographs taken with UAVs, helps identify images that contain the missing person, and provides users with the coordinates of the sought object. The program's operation is based on the application of neural networks and computer vision algorithms to recognize people in images captured by UAVs, thereby increasing the efficiency of search operations, reducing the time required, and ultimately improving the chances of successfully rescuing missing individuals.
The program supports various operating systems, including Linux, Windows, and macOS, and provides the capability to use different types of graphics accelerators, such as NVIDIA, Intel, AMD GPUs, as well as NPUs and TPUs, to optimize neural network performance. The user interface utilizes the cross-platform framework AvaloniaUI, and ONNX Runtime alongside a lightweight version of TensorFlow is employed for running machine learning models.
Computer vision models are distributed as plug-in modules that can be downloaded from the ML model catalog within the program's settings window, with each plugin containing the necessary dependencies, freeing the end user from the need to install additional dependencies and libraries. The primary neural network architectures used are YOLOv5 and RetinaNet.
The project is supported by the Lacmus Foundation, which conducts open research in the field of locating and rescuing missing people. The organization has no legal structure and is based on voluntary efforts. Statistics indicate that thousands of people go missing around the world each year. The Lacmus project aims to be a litmus test (hence its name) in addressing this issue by providing search and rescue services with modern tools to effectively carry out their tasks and save as many lives as possible.
