The Fedora Asahi Remix 40 distribution has been released, intended for installation on Mac computers equipped with ARM chips developed by Apple. Fedora Asahi Remix 40 is based on the package base of Fedora Linux 40 and comes with the Calamares installer. This is the second release published after the Asahi project transitioned from Arch to Fedora, which has enabled the Asahi Linux team to focus its efforts on reverse engineering the hardware without expending resources on maintaining a distribution now handled by the Fedora Asahi SIG working group.
Fedora Asahi Remix supports operation on Apple systems such as MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, Mac Studio, and iMac, equipped with Apple M1 and M2 ARM chips. The primary user environment features KDE Plasma 6, with an optional variant based on GNOME 46. Both editions use Wayland, and to run X11 applications, the XWayland DDX server is employed. The graphics drivers provide support for OpenGL 4.6 and OpenGL ES 3.2, which has been officially certified by the Khronos consortium (the native graphics drivers for Apple M1 chips only implement the OpenGL 4.1 specification).
Apple's sound subsystem is fully supported, as well as the camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and input devices. However, the following are not yet supported: connecting displays via USB-C, Thunderbolt / USB4, microphone, and Touch ID.
