Nightly builds of Firefox, from which version 127 will be released on June 11, have introduced a new mechanism for protecting against user movement trackingā"Bounce Tracking Protection," which enhances capabilities to block visitor tracking using redirects to other pages.
The essence of the tracking method is that the tracker's code first redirects the user to its own site, and then from there it sends them to the target page, allowing the tracker to save cookies and data in local storage tied to its site. Storing data after switching to another site enables bypassing the cross-site operation blocking methods implemented in Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP), as the intermediate page opens outside the context of another site, where tracking cookies can be freely set.
The Bounce Tracking Protection mechanism allows for capturing activity specific to tracking through redirects and periodically clearing cookies and locally stored data used for tracking. Unlike the previously available "Cookie Purging" mode, the clearing is not based on a list of known trackers, but on heuristics that aim to identify new tracker sites by analyzing behavior after a redirect.
