The release of Rescuezilla 2.5 is now available, designed for backing up, recovering systems after failures, and diagnosing various hardware issues. The distribution is built on an Ubuntu package base and continues the development of the "Redo Backup & Rescue" project, whose development was halted in 2012. Live builds are available for 64-bit x86 systems (1.2 GB) along with a deb package for installation in Ubuntu.
Rescuezilla supports backing up and recovering accidentally deleted files in Linux, macOS, and Windows partitions. It automatically searches for and connects network partitions that can be used for storing backups. The graphical interface is based on the LXDE shell. The format of the backups created is fully compatible with the Clonezilla distribution. During recovery, it supports working with images from Clonezilla, Redo Rescue, Foxclone, and FSArchiver, as well as images of virtual machines in VirtualBox VDI, VMWare VMDK, QEMU QCOW2, Hyper-V VHDx, and .dd/.img formats.
In the new version:
- 64-bit builds based on Ubuntu releases 24.04, 23.10, 23.04, 22.04, and 20.04 have been added, along with a 32-bit build based on Ubuntu 18.04.
- The partclone utility has been updated to version 0.3.27 with enhanced support for Btrfs.
- An experimental command-line management interface has been added, supporting only disk images created in Clonezilla and Rescuezilla, and implementing operations for backup creation, verification, recovery, and cloning.
- A suite for automated testing of builds has been introduced.
- Continued scanning of the image after errors occur has been enabled (errors in accessing individual directories no longer block the process).
- A bug that caused a failure when attempting to back up md-raid devices with MBR partition tables has been fixed.
- A lock to prevent laptops from entering sleep mode when closing the lid has been added.
- A problem causing Windows to fail to boot after a backup or cloning attempt of the Windows working environment has been resolved.
Additionally, it is worth noting the release of SystemRescue 11.01, a specialized Live distribution based on Arch Linux, designed for system recovery after crashes. The graphical environment used is Xfce. The size of the ISO image is 941 MB (amd64). The new version updates the Linux kernel to version 6.6.30, the partition editor GParted to version 1.6.0, and the disk cleaner nwipe to version 0.36. A script has been added to support ZFS in custom-built ISO images. Firmware for Qlogic cards has also been added.
