Broadcom, which acquired VMware's business last November, has changed the distribution terms for VMware Workstation Pro, a proprietary virtualization software suite for workstations provided for Linux and Windows. The VMware Workstation Pro hypervisor is now available for free for personal use (registration on support.broadcom.com is required for download). As before, a license purchase is required for commercial project use.
It is also reported that VMware Fusion Pro (a hypervisor for macOS) is available for free for personal use. The development and supply of VMware Workstation Player and Fusion Player have been discontinued, as they are no longer necessary following the introduction of the more functional packages VMware Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro on a free distribution basis.
